Carrick Bend Chardonnay - 2007

VINTAGE CONDITIONS

Central Victoria has seen a continuance of the drought over the vintages of 2004 - 2008. The 2007 vintage was disappointing in terms of volume with 85% below average due to severe frosts and drought conditions. Despite this the quality was very pleasing.

WINE NOTES

A very dry spring and the most severe frost to date, led to a long dry summer and early harvest from a lighter crop. A small team of experienced pickers harvested the most healthy grapes for the cuvee'. Picking was at dawn when bunches are at their coolest. This was followed by whole bunch pressing. Finally the wine was matured in French oak for 12 months. The 2007 Chardonnay follows on from our direction of style achieving freshness and length from a frosty dry year. I could argue it’s my best yet.

TASTING NOTES

Sight - Brilliant gold green youthful and bright.

Bouquet - Cashew nut and stone fruits richly perfumed toasty oak

Palate - Full rich peachy fruit with a flinty floral lift in the finish. The wine has good natural acidity that holds in balance the powerful fruit and fine grip of fruit and oak tannin at the back palate. This is a more powerful style of Chardonnay - a savoury freshness that will soften.

An excellent food wine and has good cellaring potential.
