What a night to look forward to and I was not disappointed. Just over 12 months ago I was invited to showcase a wine dinner at Box Hill Golf Club and the night was a huge success. Chef Glenn Thomson was in charge again and for this reason I knew we would be in for a treat.

The winemaker being showcased was Lindsay Ross from Knots Wines (Bendigo) and The Bridge (Heathcote). We were lucky to have both Lindsay and his wife Noeline in attendance on the night and 54 guests to wine and dine, which was a good effort for a Tuesday night!

The night flowed seamlessly, and Lindsay even threw in a ‘spring racing poem’ to liven up the night. The food and wine pairings were simply delightful, and the presentation of food faultless. The staff were attentive without being intrusive and each course was delivered with just enough time for guests to pause from the previous course.

The menu including the wines paired went something like this:

Upon Arrival

Georges Michel Methode Traditionelle, NV, Marlborough

Canapés

First course

Knots Rose Lasing Rose 2009, Bendigo

Cured Hamachi with wasabi-avocado puree and black sesame

Second course

Knots Carrick Bend Chardonnay 2008, Heathcote

Rabbit KFC with Asian coleslaw

Third course

Knots Sheep Shank Shiraz 2006, Bendigo

Seared Venison with soft polenta, roasted baby beets and horseradish cream

Fourth course

The Bridge Shuran’s Lane Shiraz 2006, Heathcote

48 hour Short Rib with a cauliflower and blue cheese puree, braising reduction and crisp porcini cigar

Cheese selection

Knots Starboard Liqueur Shiraz 2008

Australian and imported cheeses with fresh fruit and nuts

I would like to pass on a big thank you to the general manager Graham Dale and the team for a wonderful night. It is my aim in the next little while to improve my golfing ability so I can play at least one game on this highly regarded course. Happy dining and golfing!
